Grief can occur after a death, divorce, breakup, illness, or other significant loss.
It is a reaction to loss, particularly the death of someone or something living with whom one has built a link or affection.
Grief can affect your physical and mental health. It comprises physical, cognitive, behavioural, social, cultural, spiritual, and philosophical elements, in addition to the emotional response to loss.
There are five organs (heart, lung, spleen/stomach, kidney, and liver) associated with seven defined emotions. The different emotions are believed to disrupt the normal flow of life energy (qi). Both the heart and liver are especially susceptible to emotional disorders.
Grief is associated with the lungs. This emotion damages the lungs bringing about symptoms such as breathing problems, lethargy, depression, loss of appetite, and frequent sighing. Grief can lead to disorders such as bronchial asthma.
Experiencing Grief
Grief is one of the deepest pains we experience and is a natural response to losing someone you care about. There’s no right or wrong way to grieve – it’s very individual – No two people are likely to experience grief in the same way.
The way we think and feel, how our bodies work, and how we interact with others may all be influenced. Some of the more common experiences include: Difficulty concentrating, Apathy, Anger, Guilt, Sleep disturbances, Loss of appetite, Withdrawal from others, Irritability, Intense sadness or tears, Numbness, Loneliness or a sense of separateness, Loss of life’s meaning
Most addictive behaviour is rooted in some type of emotional trauma, be it a loss in the death of a loved one, coming to terms with limitations set by chronic health problems, or the end of a relationship. Individuals who have lost a loved one may seek solace in drugs, alcohol, food, sex, gambling, and shopping. They delay their recuperation and may drive themselves deeper into addiction as a result.
